Technology Using Educators

Tom Griffin

Besides the obvious "managerial" record keeping uses, and student evaluation reporting (i.e. data bases, spread sheets, and word processing), I use technology for presentations (Powerpoint), student research projects (Hyper-Studio and Digital Chisel), and student oriented email projects. The students just completed the First Annual Roosevelt World-Wide Relays, and we had over 40 elementary schools from around the world participate! I have also developed the Roosevelt P.E. Web Page that is designed for colleagues, students, parents, and administrators.

I use my computer for classroom management of information that goes home with the students, goes into the newsletters, lesson plan development, data gathering for Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart, inventory, and most recently curriculum that is included in the new NYS Department of Educ. guidelines. This includes graphic designs and illustrations drawn on my MAC. I do the specials scheduling for our building using a spreadsheet format. I have designed a test template with pop up menus, fill in the blank, along with a word bank for elementary students, using ClarisWorks to be used in the computer lab. I access the internet for listservs and websites for current information. I have an ongoing project with some elementary students developing a Hyperstudio stack related to physical education and activities in my program. I have a my own web page sitting on the school server that covers a multitude of interests including physical education. I post articles and photos on our school bbs so that others can see what our physical education program is doing. (This includes parents who have access to our bbs). I designed a complex scorekeeping program for multiple participants for girls gymnastics for the county and sectional tournament. All the management of coordinating the county gymnastics program is produced from my computer- score sheets, faxing information to coaches, athletic directors and media, memos, the printed program. I am the moderator for the Health and Physical Education forum on America Online. AOL allowed me to have the forum after I persisted in having an area for Physical Educators. I published an electronic newsletter from October 95 to May 96 until the USPE-L listserv and PE-Talk listserv filled the void. Because of the above activities, the local chapter of NYSAHPERD (CWZ) has made me the Technology Chairperson. I hope I know what I am doing. I encouraged NYSAHPERD to move in a forward direction in getting a web page. I was one of the first people in our school district to pilot the use of an eMate. It is terrific for data gathering and note taking. The next project is taking on a Polar Heart rate Monitor grant. I know nothing about the monitors. The grant targets the elementary level to encourage increased participation in activities outside of school. We have 5 buildings that are included in this grant as well as 4-5 buildings in a neighboring school. I also use video taping of student activities- If the district ever gives me a computer in the gym that is capable, I will put some of that video in my Hyperstudio stacks and maybe my web page. The video is used for open house and for the kids to view. I also use video for aerobics, step aerobics, jump rope. I have used the OLD Nintendo with the track meet program including the defunct power pad in my class room unit. I have a very nice shelf unit that had dual cassette, radio, and 7 CD exchange. We use that almost every day. I still use a variable speed record player for square dance.

Larry "Mac" McDonald

As a coordinator for Health and Physical Education, I serve Jackson and Macon Counties, located in the mountains of Western North Carolina. We starting by getting physical educators their own email address (hotmail) then subscribing with PE Central. We use Macs with FileMaker Pro, Microsoft Word, Typestyler, Page Maker, Power Point. Also, we are in the process of using POLAR hrms with both school systems. Soon to use Virtual PC 2.0 to help convert the Mac to use with a bubble scanner that can produce its own forms, scan them and report the results. We are just scratching the surface with technology. There are so many exciting things to happen on this wonderful journey.

You name it, I use it: cameras, video equipment, computers, digital cameras, multimedia, laser disc, cd-rom, web pages, heart monitors, palm top, assessment software for Adapted Physical Education, email, and desktop video teleconference. Technology is integral to finding and retreiving information in today's world. In teacher preparation classes I use every sort of technology to demonstrate concepts and ideas. In several classes teacher preparation students are linked to high achieving physical educators through the telementor project. Building a sense of community is one of the highest purposes of technology. All students get an opportunity to develop simple multimedia, use assessment software, participate in a desktop video teleconference, and develop assignments including unit plans and lesson plans using all forms of technology.

I enjoy browsing the net to locate pe activities, lesson plans, ideas, etc. I thoroughly enjoy e-mail: I served as a "telementor" for two college students majoring in physical education. I enjoy swapping lesson plan ideas via the listserve, and generally, I'm an observer to the many topics disussed on the listserve. I enjoy word processing programs for test construction, worksheets, curriculum writing, etc. and I have recently started using "GradeQuick" to calculate all my health and physical education grades on computer.

I use a variety of computer technology, BUT most importantly, I use the Newton Messagepad and Learner Profile for assessing my students and my teaching.

Barbara Schmidt

I use a Newton with Learner Profile, computer lab, laptop computer, desktop computer with word processors, databases, spreadsheets, presentation tools, video camera, snappy, PCTV, zip drive, scanner, modem, and Polar Vantage XL heart monitors watches with computer interface. I use the Newton for assessments, the network computer lab for programs I wrote for studying the muscles of the body and finding their target heart rates, a laptop computer for the students to enter their fitness data into a database(MS Works), and for me to use at one of my schools, the desktop for letters to parents and afterschool sports schedules (MS Word), spreadsheets, for my grades and check lists (Excel), PowerPoint for a presentation at open house using pictures of students utilizing the video camera, snappy, PCTV and zip drive. The scanner and modem have been used by me at home to create a web page for our state organization, WAHPERD. Look for it this summer. The Polar Heart monitor watches are downloaded on the laptop and the desktop and computer print outs are used by my students to analyze the different activities they participate in and how stress effects them in the classroom. These watches have also been used by the teachers and other staff members in my buidings. I created a database for our elementary track meets to report the results (over 2000 students). I'm anelementary teacher(1-6) and have two buildings (500 students).

I currently use a hand held PC, personal PC, school PC network, as well as peripherals such as scanners, modems, CD ROM, zip drive, recordable CDs, etc. I use the technology for EVERYTHING! My lesson plans are stored in a database, as are my student records. Grades are recorded on an Excel spreadsheet on the hand held-then transferred to my PC, and added to the student records. I use Power Point presentations for my classes, as well as inservices and presentations. I also use Publisher for a variety of purposes, but most recently as a format for a new PE workbook that I am creating. I have created an Independent Study course for High School students that they access directly from my web site, and the web site also serves (hopefully) as a resource for other Health and Physical educators. I use the Internet extensively as a resource for ideas and viewpoints, and I find the listservs invaluable as a forum for professional development.

I use the computer for all the After School Intramural schedules, basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, soccer, and baseball. All my grades for PE are done using the computer. I use the computer to edit our Sport's Newsletter. The students will type in all their sports' information onto a disk. I will proofread their stories and then formulate the student sports' letter, once a month. These are just some of the things we do using the computer.

Gary Nihan

I also use technology for scheduling and record keeping for after school activities such as our basketball program and our annual road race. I also store information such as grades and monthly newsletters for PTO newsletter and my unit decriptions for each grade. I also have been using my word processor program to update my unit and daily lesson plans. I also use the Cooper/prudential Fitness gram program to assess health fitness levels of my 3rd thru 5th grade students. These students in fact do a lot of the data input themselves.

Fitness equipment(rowing machines, stairsteppers and climbers, ergometers, recumbant cycles, treadmill), computers, heart monitors and interface's, video's, camcorders and digital camera. I use the fitness equipment and computers in a fitness lab situation. Students create their own electronic portfolios on personal discs and keep track of fitness level, set goals, monitor their progress, create fitness plans, calculate their target heart rate and compare calorie intake to exercise output. Students access health and skill related fitness information and sports information via the computer. Students use heart monitors which they can also download or print out. Students use video and digital cameras as a method of assessment and feedback. As a teacher I use computers in a time management role: grading, roll taking, preparing lessons, task cards, class lists, handouts, homework, tests and presentations.

Mary Jane Pardue

I use for publishing grades, recording fitness scores and sending results home, internet for information from listserve, inservice, etc. I keep a good record of school events using the Cassio - every thing from buletin boards to special events.I also send our school adopter copies of what is taking place at school and for use on web page. I use a data base for grades, making forms, when need to keep and sort just about anything like shirt purchases, permission sheets, etc. I use the walkie/talkie when going out side with students. The cell phone comes in handy when on school trips or at our Enviromental Camp ( 6 miles from school and no phone).

The technology I use at school for my classes includes a pentium 133 computer/printer set-up on a rolling desk, a Sharp video camera with 4" view screen, and a tv/vcr on a rolling stand. The computer is used for compiling data base entries of assessments (student-entered) on Works 4.0. I then compile a form letter that prints out each student's report. The report explains the rubrics and gives the individual scores. I also use the computer extensively for making my activity sheets, labels, signs, parent letters, and lesson planning. I use the computer as a station in class occasionally to allow the students to operate nutrition or anatomy programs. The video camera works for me as an assessment tool since I can watch the 4" screen while sitting at the computer or my desk after class. It also serves as "eyes" for me during gymnastics. I set it up by the climbing net or the vaulting horse - wherever there is a percieved safety problem - and let it run. We have also recorded ourselves (teachers) giving the safety instructions to the classes, in case there is any question on what the children have been told. The tv/vcr set-up is used for instructional videos (jump rope, spinjammers, dance, etc.) as a class focus or for action tapes such as the Olympic games where it can be a resting station. At times, I allow students to judge their own performances by watching the tv screen instead of the small 4" screen on the camera. This is fairly minimal, but I have lots of time to grow!

I use the Apple Newton to assess my students exit outcomes and objectives. Along with Learner Profile to print out reports. The E-Mate is used as a tool for my students to enter in their fitness data and transfer the information to their electronic portfolio's. I have not had the gym networked yet, so I have to take the E-mate to the computer lab and connect it there to the network. I use Heart Rate Monitors to monitor the effort levels of my students and to teach them how hard they need to work to maintain certain levels of intensity. I have worksheets I use for instructional technology, rather then traditional learning styles. Students can take the disk I have for them on a subject, example: the muscles and go to a web site I have found to answer questions from the worksheet. I use the Sharp Video camera to assess students skills and also to have them assess their own skills and answer questions I have given them task cards.

Michelle Dunn

I use my digital camera to take pictures of the students participating in the activities. I post the pictures on a bulletin board as well as put them in a photo album. I also include pictures in the school newsletter so parents can see what we are doing in Physical Education. I used the internet in class during the Winter Olympics for students to study and learn about all of the Winter sports. They answered questions as part of the unit.

Robin Litaker

Assessment /evaluation using Apple Newton and Sunburst's Learner Profile. Students use interactive programs to reinforce fitness concepts. Programs such as Power point / Hyper studio are used as teaching tools for each unit. Oher items in use include video, digital cameras, laser disc players, the Internet , homepage.

At wright elementary I use technology in all phases of my phy ed program, student assessment, daily lesson plans, grading, fitness, awards, student profiles, video & still pictures, internet exploring.

Kathryn LaMaster, Ph.D.

I implement technology into our teacher education program at San Diego State University during practicum and lecture courses. Students receive hands on instruction, exploration assignments, critical examination of skill performance, critical examination of teaching performance, web site exploration, and supplemental communication.

Mark Stanbrough

I use a variety of technology including heart rate monitors, e-mail, WWW, creating web pages, scanner, digital camera, desktop videoconference. I use the technology in every class I teach, especially in Technology in HPER class. I usually require students to make a web page or PowerPoint presentation in class to "showcase" some their projects throughout the semester. We have also transformed our traditional on-campus graduate classes to a distance learning format with the WWW being the basis for a virtual classroom. The demonstration and introduction to software specific in the field is also very important.

Suzanne Mullins

I use both PC and Mac formats. My PC at home is used for email and internet access. I am a teacher trainer for my district. (Mac Basics,Clarisworks and Powergrade) I use my Mac at home and at my site (Hillsdale Middle) mainly for school use. My department uses Clarisworks database for best mile and student b-days bulletin boards, combinations, field trip lists generation, track and field scores/qualifying etc. We use the Clarisworks WP for newsletters, announcements, permission slips etc. We also use the Powergrade software for grades. Our District (Cajon Valley Union) has installed Groupwise throughout District (alomst) and we use it to plan intramurals and share pertinet activity info, etc. with the other middle school coaches.

Physical education is naturally a movement-visually oriented class ideally suited to technology. I use word processing, spreadsheets, databases, netscape and email to find activities and communicate about activities, multimedia programs-- KidPix, HyperStudio, HyperCard, ClarisWorks, QuickTake Camera, QuickCam movie camera. I have used video capture programs with the video camera. It's nice to use digital pictures of your own students in teaching and evaluating new skills and in mini teaching lessons. I make lessons and presentations about my program with the multimedia programs above.

Stephanie Burkley

I use A.D.A.M. with my fourth grade class to supplement lessons on the body we have done in the gym. The lessons are from Health Related Fitness series. I use Fitnessgram software for fitness testing. I use the Apple Newton message pad 2000 with learner profile for skills assessment with rubrics I have devised. I have Bonnie's Fitware, but have not used it yet.I have used this listserve to find new ideas and communicate with other Physical Educators, as well as to ask questions I have concerning my subject matter. I have used the internet and e-mail to bring my teaching to another level. I had always known what Physical Education should be, but out of college I never quite knew HOW to go about it on certain things. I use e-mail to communicate with the officers of my state association, of which I am also an officer.

Bill Stinson

I am using a wide variety of technology in distance course delivery and electronic masters program, such as Internet, web site construction, forum discussions, video conferencing, and evaluative software.
