Purchasing a Handheld Computer

Place Your Graphic HereHandheld computers weigh less than a pound, are battery operated, and fit in one hand. A stylus is typically used for input, but mini-keyboards and virtual keyboards also are available. The stylus allows for tapping on various buttons on the screen, tapping on a small keyboard image, or actually writing on the screen.

The two most popular operating systems for the handheld computer are the Palm Operating System and the Windows Mobile Software for Pocket PC.

Palm OS models have a simple user interface. Most have expansion slots that let you add memory or attach separately purchased accessories. Many models come with Documents to Go - word processing and spreadsheet software similar to that used in Pocket PCs but more versatile. If you are a Macintosh user - this is the handheld for you. Windows users can benefit from either Palm OS models or Pocket PCs. At this time the two most popular models for physical educators are the Palm TX and the Tungsten E2. The main difference between the two models, is that the TX works with a wireless network.

Pocket PC models are a little more like miniature computers. They have a processor with extra horsepower and come with word processing and a spreadsheet. There is also a scaled downed version of Internet Explorer. All of the application integrate well with the Windows environment. This is a viable option for Windows users but I don't recommend it for Macintosh users. Popular models for physical educators are HP iPAQ 2495 and HP iPAQ 2795.

Most handheld computers have an expansion slots for some form of removable memory card: CompactFlash, MultiMedia card, SecureDigital cards, or Memory Stick.

Device Of The Month

Casio

The EX-S600 is just slightly larger than a credit card and just .54" at its thinnest point. Packed into the pocket-sized body are 6.0 megapixels and MPEG-4 quality movie recording capabilities, allowing more than one hour of standard video recording when using a 1GB Sd memory card. And, with Casio s EXILIM Engine's Anti-Shake DSP, blurry pictures are nearly a ting of the past.

U.S. Department of Education Announces No New PEP Grant Applications to be Accepted in 2007

"There will not be a Carol M. White Physical Education Program competition this year. We received enough high quality applications last year that we decided to use the existing slate to make new awards in FY 2007 for this program. We will begin to develop the FY 2007 slate for potential new awards and review budget requests in the next few weeks. We hope to announce FY 2007 new grant awards for this program late in the spring or early summer."

Additional details are posted at the U.S. Department of Education's website.

Daylight Savings Time

Daylight-saving time will start three weeks earlier than usual this year on March 11. It will also end one week later than usual. The change could confuse your computer.

Your computer may already be updated to reflect the change in daylight-saving time. But, if you’re not sure, visit Microsoft’s Daylight Saving Time Help and Support Center. It will help you determine if you have the patches for Windows and Outlook installed. You can even use it to check your Windows phone or handheld.

Fitt Rx

FITT Rx (TM) provides a quick reference tool for teacher/student use in the same way a medical doctor uses a prescription pad. Thus, the FITT Rx (TM) software program is designed to be a quick and simple method of providing a quality exercise prescription. It helps make prescription quick by providing the typical data for all of the basic exercise prescription variables: frequency, intensity, time, and type of exercise.

The software allows you to purchase the product once and use it forever. It makes a great tool for communicating with parents.

The idea of FITT RxTM is to provide a quick reference tool for physical education teachers to use in the same way that a medical doctor uses a drug prescription pad.

Thus the FITT RxTM software program is designed to be a quick and simple method of providing a quality exercise prescription.

It helps make prescription quick by providing the typical data for all of the basic exercise prescription variables: frequency, intensity, time, and type of exercise (FITT).

The concept behind FITT RxTM:

  • To store exercise prescription data with the intent to help guide a student during a workout.
  • To store exercise prescription data with the intent of using this information as a reference tool for students.
  • To teach students about the basic variables used for exercise prescription (FITT).
  • To present the four primary exercise prescription variables (FITT) in one quick and easy to read page.
  • To provide an exercise prescription model to guide the development of exercise prescription by summarizing typical formula(s) and data used for each of the four variables (FITT).

This program is neither designed to be a comprehensive fitness data base, nor a fitness evaluation system.

Works on Windows XP, Mac OSX 10.3.9 or greater, Palm OS 4.2 or greater; PocketPC Windows Mobile 2003 (second edition) and 5.0 based. Comes with FileMaker Mobile which facilitates the communication between PC and handheld.

In The News

A Classroom Where Students Move All the Time!

Student in some schools are spending their days standing at adjustable podiums, kneeling on mats, or sitting on exercise balls during class. The reason: to burn more calories and improve fitness. There are also office workers who are walking slowly on treadmills while working at their computers.

Excel Tips: Using Dates

The first step in using dates is to format the cell as a date. Select the cell, Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) and select Format - select date and then select one of the date formats.

Sometimes you want the Spreadsheet to automatically give you today's date or time in a cell. This is accomplished using the =TODAY() function and =NOW() function. These values update everytime a worksheet recalculates.

If you want to enter today's date, but you don't want it to change then use the keyboard and press control key and semi-colon key simultaneously.

Disc Burning Tips to Prevent Errors

Here are four tips to follow to help ensure that your discs finish burning and don't crash and burn:

1. Be sure to use your software's verify option when burning.

2. Be sure to use the right media - also stay away from "very cheap" media.

3. Use the second fastest speed for burning instead of the fastest.

4. Shut down any applications you are not using when burning discs.

Future Tech

Portable Lungs

Scientists at Swansea University in Wales have developed a blood-air mass exchanger (artificial lung) that has overcome a critical problem of such devices: It keeps blood from clotting on contact with the artificial surfaces. The new portable device could eventually allow patients with respiratory infections to recover outside of high-cost units.

ActiveSync 4.5
Microsoft just released an updated version of ActiveSync. It is used to synchronize mobile phones and pocket PCs with computers. There are a number of bug fixes and enhancements. But other features have been removed. So review the details on Microsoft’s site before upgrading.

You’ll also want to review the system requirements. Your phone or handheld must run Windows Smartphone 2002, Windows Pocket PC 2002 or later versions of Windows Mobile. You need Outlook 2002 (XP) or later. Additionally, ActiveSync 4.5 only works on Windows XP. If you have Vista, you’ll need to use Windows Mobile Device Center 6. Whew, that’s a lot!

Questions and Answers

Q: How big of a monitor should I purchase.

A: It depends on how large the area is where you plan to put it. A rule-of-thumb is your multiply the size of the monitor (e.g., 36") by 1.5 = 54" and that is the minimum distance that you should be from the screen.

Q: What do I need to watch HDTV?

A: Lease or buy equipment from your cable, satellite, or phone company and sign up for HD service. Connect your box to the television with component-video or HDMI cables. Composite-video and S-video cables don't carry HD. Tune into an HD channel - it will have a different number than the standard-definition channel.
