iPod in the Classroom

Place Your Graphic HereThe iPod has several potential roles to play in the physical education class. Most notably is its ability to replace your music system and allow you instantaneous access to any song or place in a song.

Connect the iPod to your sound system and control the output from the palm of your hand.

Even better, complete the steps below to connect your iPod to a projection system so that you can show video clips to your students:
1. Compress your videoclips to MPEG-4 or H.264 (e.g., .m4v, .mp4, .mov).
2. Use QTPro to export your videoclips to iPod format.
3. Drag your files to the iTunes folder.
4. Transfer files to your iPod using an USB cable.
5. Connect your iPod to a projector using an A/V cable (1/4 " mini plug with 3 plastic bands/red, yellow, and white RCA plugs on the other end).
6. Plug the red plug into video (different than you would think), plug the white into left audio and yellow in right audio.
7. Set you iPod (video settings: tv out: on) to send video out - be prepared the you won't see the video any longer on your iPod.

Tips
Spreadsheet: Filtering and Sorting

Filtering and sorting are two different functions. The sort function rearranges information in a list. The filter function temporarily hides items that don't match the filter criteria.

The most important thing to do when sorting is to select the entire spreadsheet, then select sort from the "Data" menu and pick one or more columns.

There are different types of filtering, we will look at the AutoFiltering. Follow the steps below:

1. Click a cell in the list of information that you would like to filter.
2. Choose Data, Filter, and AutoFilter.
3. Click on the down arrow to reveal a pull-down menu.
4. Select the filter option you would like to use.

You also can write your own custom autofilter by choosing the drop-down list's Custom option. You may use greater than, less than, and/or equal to to create your filter. To remove a filter , simply click the Down arrow and choose all. It is important to note that you can filter only one list at a time on any given worksheet.

Battery Boosters: Ten Ways to Make Your Batteries Last Longer

1. Turn off any accessory when you are not using it (e.g., the flash on a digital camera).

2. Turn off the LCD when not using it (e.g., LCD screen on a camcorder).

3. Tweak the power manager (e.g., laptop computers typically have power manager utility that you can adjust in order to save battery power).

4. Turn off your wi-fi connection (e.g., handheld computers and laptops us allot more battery power when connected to a wi-fi signal or searching for one).

5. Lower the brightness setting on any monitor.

6. Avoid skipping (e.g., MP3 players use more battery power when skip songs).

7. Turn off the backlight for the screen.

8. Play shorter songs or video clips (e.g., a player's battery will last long playing 1000 5-minute songs compared to five 1000-minute songs.

9. Keep your device as cool as possible.

10. Buy a longer lasting battery or carry additional batteries with you.

The Future

Sensors Everywhere

Cognos sensors are already being developed for toilets and sinks to measure water flow. These sensors will report toilets using an excessive amount of water due to worn values. But it won't stop there, consider these uses for sensors:

- A refrigerator that sends a message back to manufacturer when its coolant level is low.

-Sensors in soap dispensers that can record whether individuals wash their hands.

Crossbow Technology of San Jose, has developed low-cost wireless sensors for Life Fitness, the leading manufacturer of treadmills and exercise bikes. Customers, along with trainers, create a personal fitness plan on the Web, and the plan is communicated to each exercise machine. The sensors also can alert owners to maintenance issues.
