3. Set the playback rate for 15 fps.

4. Set the audio data rate to 32 Kbps, 22.5 kHz.

Device Of The Month

Virtual Keyboards and Roll-up Displays

One is here the other is on its way...

The virtual laser keyboard uses the power of laser and infrared technology. It projects a full-size keyboard onto the table and you type on the laser projection. The detection technology is based on optical recognition. It Place Your Graphic Here

allows the user to tap the images of the keys, hear the sound of key tapping, and see the result on the computer screen. Unlike many of the portable keyboards for handheld computers, the Virtual Laser Keyboard, although smaller (weighs two ounces and is the size of a cigarette lighter) than the folding/portable keyboards, provides a full-size QWERTY keyboard.

Epson recently created the world's first OLED-based print head, which is a hugePlace Your Graphic Hereadvance in an area that could eventually produce portable, flexible, and even roll-up displays.

Quick Tips

Excel: Print Settings

1. Always check the Print Preview so that you know what you are printing.

2. Adjust the print settings using the Page Setup dialog box. For example, change the worksheet's orientation from portrait to landscape, change the Scaling figure to something less than 100%, or click the Fit To button so that the entire worksheet fits on one page.

3. Use the Print Area command (under the File menu) to quickly specify a certain block of a worksheet for printing. Start by highlighting the area you wish to print, then select File - Print Area - and Set Print Area.

4. Make the reading of your spreadsheets easier, by printing the gridlines (select File - Page setup and click the Sheet tab - make sure the box beside Gridlines is checked).

Improving Your Images (using the correct resolution and colors)

1. If you are going to print the image - set the resolution to at least 300 dpi and the color to CMYK - this will produce a higher quality image.

2. If you are going to use the image on a web page - set the resolution to 72 and the color to web safe colors.

3. If you are going to use the image in a powerpoint presentation - set the resolution to 72 and the color to RGB.

Exporting/Importing 101

The best way to transfer data from one program to another is to copy and paste. However, this is not always possible. In those instances when copy/paste don't work follow the steps below:

1. Save or export (depends on the program) your data in tab deliminated or comma deliminated format [this is sometimes referred to as ASCII text or plain text].

2. Import your data into the new program. Be sure to select either tab or comma deliminated when the program asks.

3. When importing data from one database file to another - you will need to match the fields (using the field matching dialog box) before importing.

In The News

PlayStation 3

Although the PlayStation 3 is not expected to show up until 2007 - it recently made an appearance at a show in Los Angeles. The PlayStation 3 will have seven image processors (the PlayStation 2 has one) and each one will be ten times faster than the PS/2. Using a camera, the PS/3 will be able to track the movement of different body parts independently and get a rough idea of player's distance from the console by measuring head size. The device also will be able to track objects coated with special reflective material that will make them bright. Users, wearing the material as gloves, will be able to move virtual objects.

Also look for a new generation of cameras that can record accurate 3-D images using infrared flashes. When a hand, for example, moves toward the camera, it is illuminated with an infrared flash, the game console then measures how long it takes the light to travel to the player's hand and be reflected back into the camera. This provides the PS/3 with sufficient information to determine the distance between the camera and the user.

The Future

Tags - Tags - Tags

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags will soon be showing up everywhere. An RFID tag contains a microchip and a tiny radio antenna., The tag broadcasts the unique identifying number of the item to any compatible reader within range, from a few inches for credit cards [have you seen the new credit card commercials on television?], up to 20 feet for merchandise tags, and up to 750 feet for battery-powered tags in toll passes. The reader then communicates with a computer database, where information linked to that ID number is stored, such as details about when a product was manufactured or medical records of people who have tags implanted. The database in turn can be linked to other networks via the Internet to allow for more widespread data sharing (Consumer Report, 6/2006). What do you think will be the uses of these tags in physical education, health education, and sport?
