Which VR Bike is Right for You?

Place Your Graphic HereIn past issues we have examined the GameBike from CatEye and the VCycling system. So, how do the two systems compare? Following the links for each device will provide you with detailed information. But, generally speaker, the VCycling system comes with a Trek Bike, the Trainer and Steering Unit and all the software. It Requires the purchase of a computer. VCycling is like a real biking experience - the user sits on a regular bike and steering is the same as riding outdoors. The software displays all the training data on the screen during ride and also provides for recall of the data at any time. Training data includes: Heart rate (actual, average, and maximum), speed, cadence or RPMs, power or wattage, incline and distance. The training rides include rides and races from all over the world. These rides can be adjusted when class time limits the ride to five to ten minutes per youngster.

The GameBike provides for more of a gaming situation as compared to a training situation. The GameBike comes with the bike and Playstation Interface. It features a fitness computer that also gives exercise results along with the game competition. The automatic heart rate control program equalizes competition between users. The GameBike Pro controls every movement on the screen during play: Handlebars control steering, pedals (rpm) control speed, and the user controls the strategy. Comes with a three-year institutional warranty for the commercial version.

Device Of The Month

HDTV

Standard analog televisions are capable of displaying 480 lines of resolution which is the same resolution as a DVD player. HDTV sets also are capable of displaying a DVD's 480 lines but "progressively" (referred to as 480p). This means all the lines on the screen are drawn simultaneously, producing an ultra-sharp picture in one-sixtieth of a second. However, the Blu-ray discs and HD-DVDs - offer high-def video quality.

Quick Tips

Spreadsheets: Function by Function

Before we get into functions (starting next month), we need to review the basics of spreadsheets. Electronic spreadsheets appear as grids with rows and columns. Each intersections is called a "cell" and is referred to by its column letter and row number. You can type words, numbers, or formulas into each cell. The formulas can include math operators (+,-,*,/) and special operators called functions. All formulas begin with an = sign, this tells the software to perform a calculation.

The important things to remember is the order of operators. In an equation with both + or - and * or /, the multiply (*) and division (/) occur first from left to right and then the addition (+) and subtraction(-) occur from left to right. This can be altered by using (). Since anything in () occurs even before the multiply (*) and division (/).

PowerPoint Bullets Quick Tips

Are you tired of using the same bullet in your powerpoint presentations. Then, highlight the section of text where you would like a different style of bullet. Choose Format and Bullets And Numbering. A dialog box gives you the option of removing all bullets or choosing one of seven bullet styles. You can even customize the bullets by clicking Customize in the dialog box. Or, better yet, click Picture in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box and turn pictures into bullets. Click Import and you can add your own picture file for use as a bullet.

In The News

Adidas' Responsive Basketball Shoe

With an electromagnetic sensor in the heel, your shoes know how hard your feet hit the floor, whether you are cutting, lining up for a free throw, or going in for a lay up. Knowing this, the shoe triggers a motor to adjust the tension on a cable in the midsole. An increase in tension means more shock absorption for jump shots. Check out these shoes at http://www.adidas.com.

More PS/3 Information

It looks like the PS/3 will launch on November 17 with a price tag of $499. This includes a 20GB hard-disk drive. There also will be a 60GB HDD version for $599. Both versions will play back Blu-ray Disc movies with video outputs supporting the format's highest resolution (1080p). The redesigned controller is motion-sensitive along six axes, including roll, pitch and yaw. This will provides for more immersive gameplay.

Camcorder on the Cheap

Two camcorders have entered the market at $129 each. Pure Digital has released a "Point & Shoot Video Camcorder." It includes a 2X digital zoom and a 1.5" LCD display, and shoots 30 minutes of MPEG-4 video onto 512MB of internal memory. A pop-out USB connection allows the transfer of footage to a Windows or Mac OS computer. It runs on two AA batteries. The RCA version is called the Small Wonder EZ101 and offers similar features. Check them out at http://www.mysmallwonder.com/.

The Future

Super Plastic

Researchers at General Electric have come up with a way to process a common polymer so that it repels fluid so effectively that honey rolls right off of it. This new discovery allows for everything from new, easy-to-clean building materials to cheap diagnostic devices with plastic microfluidic channels.

You have questions - send them to Bonnie Mohnsen at: bmohnsen@pesoftware.com - you may see your question show up in our Q and A section next month!

Questions and Answers

Q: Should I update my ActiveSync 3.8 to 4.1?

A: If you have a Windows Mobile 5.0 device then yes you need to upgrade; however, if you are using a Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition or earlier device, then stick with ActiveSync 3.8 since there are no significant features that pre-WM5 devices can take advantage of.

Q: What should I do if I my PC doesn't see my Windows Mobile device?

A: A common issue is users connecting their Windows Mobile device to their PC's USB port before installing ActiveSync. This causes the problem of the computer not "seeing" the Mobile device. The fix is: 1) install ActiveSync, plug in your device, open the Device Manager (Start-> Settings-> Control Panel-> System-> Hardware-> Device Manager). Delete the unknown device and unplug it. Plug the device in again and it should be detected by ActiveSync.
