PEP Grant Update

The PEP grant has been funded at $78.8 million for the 2012 fiscal year. This is the same amount that was funded for the 2011 fiscal year. The House and the Senate came to an agreement on the bill on December 15. The U.S. Department of Education has indicated that it will not be soliciting new applications, instead it will fund 2011 fiscal year applicants who were not awarded funding last year but still met necessary requirements.

New Updates

Mozilla's Nine Fixes

Mozilla found and fixed several critical-rated bugs affecting the browser engine in Firefox and other Mozilla products. There are patches for Firefox 10.0, 7.0, and 3.6.26; SeaMonkey 2. and 2.4; and Thunderbird 10.0 and 3.1.18.

Adobe Patches

Adobe addressed critical vulnerabilities in its Reader X10.1.1 and Acrobat X 10.1.1 (and earlier versions) for both Windows and Macs. Adobe advises updating to the latest versions: Reader X10.1.2 or 9.5 and Acrobat 10.1.2 or 9.5.

Chrome

The latest Chrome update (16.0.912.77) fixes for two "significant" problems.

Skype 5.8

The newest release of Skype of Windows offers a number of significant improvements, including beta support for audio- and video-calling with Facebook contacts—even if the contact is not a Skype user. To start a video with a Facebook friend, select the person in your Skype contact list, and select Video Call. Skype 5.8 also supports 108p HD video quality. Group screen sharing is another new feature, and it lets you share an application (or an entire screen) with those in a conference call. A Push-to-Talk feature lets you quickly mute and unmute your microphone.

Research Works

Weaver, A.M., Hill, A.C., Andreacci, J.L., & Dixon, C.B. (2009). Evaluation of hand-to-hand bioelectrical impedance analysis for estimating percent body fat in young arms. International Journal of Exercise Science, 2(4), 254-263.

Hand to hand BIA significantly underestimated %BF in the total sample. Following exercise, there was minimal, but statistically significant reduction in HBIA-measured %BF pre- to post-exercise for the total sample. HBIA underestimated %BF when compared to ADP and the individual prediction error exceeded current recommendations when assessing young adults. In addition, performing sub- maximal aerobic exercise prior to the assessment decreased the %BF estimate.

Q and A

Q: I received an email with a bunch of rectangles with red Xs - what gives?

A: Although many email clients support embedded photos these days, the red X represents a photo that is not being displayed. Look above the email area for a dialog box that contains a check box to indicate that you wish to the email client to download the embedded images. Try that.

New Devices ("The Up and Coming" and "The Here and Now")

New Nanotechnology-based Coatings

These coatings help phones and other electronic devices resist water. These coatings are water-repellent and not waterproof.

Android 4.0 Tablets

Tablets with screen sizes up to 10 inches and Google's Android 4.0 OS will soon be on the market for prices ranging from $100 to $250. The Ainol Novo7 will be the first sub-$100 Android 4.0 tablet. It has a 7-inch capacitive screen and a 1GHz single-core MIPS processor, and provides 8 hours of battery life for viewing video, 7 hours for Web browsing, and 6 hours for gaming. It addition to its 3D graphics capabilities, it has 1080p video decoding and an HDMI port.

Google Docs for Android: Offline Access

Google Docs users can now get offline access to documents on their Android-based phones and tablets. The upgraded app makes offline access possible for Google documents, presentations, spreadsheets, uploaded images, and file formats such as .pdf, .doc, .xls, and .ppt. Users can make a document available offline while they have an Internet connection, or send a request to do so while their device is disconnected. In the second cast, the document will update the next time the device reconnects to the Internet.

Games Powered by Movement

Striv games are powered by walking, running, and taking the starts. Create your own enchanted island, take on fund challenges, and beat your personal best.

Scosche MyTrek

The Scosche myTrek wirelessly connects to your iPod touch or iPhone. It manages your real-time pulse, target training zone, calories burned, distance, pace, music, and more. The app uses a Bluetooth enabled armband for data collection.

Basis Band

The Basis band is the first continuous health tracker that measures heart rate at the wrist, rather than the chest or arm. An LED on the underside of the watch shines green light (which blood absorbs particularly well) onto the wearer's wrist, and a sensor detects how much light bounces back. Because blood volume in the wrist is greatest immediately after a heartbeat, the reflected light can be used to determine pulse. The watch also includes a three-axis accelerometer to detect motion, electrodes to measure galvanic skin response, and heat sensors to track and skin and environmental temperature. Real-time data—steps, calories burned and heart rate—appears on the watch display, or users can upload stats via Bluetooth or USB to a website. Waiting for accuracy studies. [From Popular Science]

BodyMedia Patch

Coming soon, BodyMedia will start selling the first disposable health-monitoring patch. The company, which makes, fitness-tracking armbands, took its small sensors and loaded them into a 0.5 ounce, 3.5-inch-long patch that sticks to the user's upper arm. BodyMedia found a breathable adhesive that makes the patch stick for up to seven days, even in water, while keeping it comfortable to peel off. The patch, which is less than half the weight of BodyMedia's smallest armband monitor, senses motion, sweatiness, skin temperature and the rate of heat flowing off the body. It wirelessly uploads the data to a website or app that charts steps taken, calories burned, activity levels and sleep patterns. [From Popular Science]

Scanadu's Monitoring Device

Scanadu is creating a monitoring device that can sense a user's vital signs without any contact. The Tricorder could record chest movement and face-color fluctuations with a digital video camera. Software would then analyze the footage to determine a person's respiration and heart rates, respectively. An infrared camera in the device also will record body temperature. The company may include other monitors, too, such as ones that could sense disease-associated molecules that people exhale into the air. The Tricorder could be on the market as early as 2014..
